Everyone at home suddenly stopped me from eating papaya the moment they found out im pregnant. I love it and im not sure if its raw or ripe thats the issue. Can someone clear this up?
I had a sensitive pregnancy so I just avoided papaya completely to not take chances. Especially unripe, that's a clear no. If you really want some ripe papaya, please run it by your doctor first, dont risk it on your own.
The concern is mainly with unripe papaya, which has a substance that can cause contractions. Ripe is usually considered safe in small amounts. Since opinions differ, honestly best to check with your gynac and follow what she says for your case.
Avoid raw and semi ripe papaya, that one's not recommended in pregnancy. Ripe papaya in moderation is generally fine. I personally just skipped it altogether both times to avoid confusion, plenty of other fruits to eat.
Beta, the rule we always followed is raw or unripe papaya is a no during pregnancy, elders strictly avoided it. Fully ripe papaya in small amounts is considered okay by many. But to be safe, do ask your doctor first.
