How do doctors detect down syndrome during pregnancy?
Hi ladies, my sister is pregnant and we were discussing health screenings. How do doctors detect Down syndrome during pregnancy? We want to be informed about the tests available.
They usually check this in the first trimester itself with an NT scan and a blood test called double marker. My doctor explained everything while I was lying down, almost sleeping because of pregnancy fatigue! Just ask your gynac, they do these standard tests for everyone now.
Double trouble means double the tests, haha! With my twins, they recommended the NT scan and then we did the NIPT blood test just to be absolutely sure. Gynacs have standard screening timelines, so they will let you know exactly when to get what done.
They check this through an NT scan and blood tests in the first trimester—I remember eating a big chocolate bar right before my scan because my baby was sleeping and wouldn't move! The doc will guide you on the exact weeks to get it done.
Our elders said we didn't have all these tests in their times, but I trusted my doctor and did them. They do a special ultrasound scan to measure the baby's neck thickness and some blood tests in the third month. It is very simple and gives complete peace of mind.
Humare yahan toh doctor teesre mahine me ek ultrasound aur khoon ki jaanch likhte hain jisse ye sab pata chalta hai. Aap bilkul chinta mat karo, bas doctor ki bati hui saari lab jaanch time pe karwa lo.
Yes, I had a C-section and remember undergoing these tests. They did an ultrasound called the Nuchal Translucency scan at 12 weeks along with a blood test. If those show any high risk, they might suggest an amniocentesis test later, but it's very routine and nothing to be scared of.
I am currently in my second trimester, and they did the NT scan and Dual Marker test for me around the 12th week. Actually, did your doctor suggest the NIPT test as well? I heard it's more accurate but slightly expensive.
