Everyone in my house has banned papaya saying its dangerous in pregnancy. I really love it though and im 5 months along. Is it the raw one thats the problem or ripe also? confused with all the advice.
After my loss earlier I became extra careful with everything, and papaya was one fruit I completely avoided just for peace of mind. I'm not saying it caused anything for anyone, just that I didn't want to take chances. Do what feels safe for you and check with your doctor.
Beta in our families we always avoided raw and semi ripe papaya during pregnancy, that's the old caution. Fully ripe papaya in small amount is said to be fine but raw one is the worry. When in doubt just skip it for these months, plenty other fruits are there.
My gynac told me raw and unripe papaya has a substance that can trigger contractions, so that's the one to avoid. Fully ripe papaya in moderation is generally considered ok, but she said if you're anxious just avoid it altogether. I chose to skip it entirely to be relaxed.
I'd say err on the side of caution with this one. The raw kind especially is best avoided in pregnancy. Please ask your own gynac since each pregnancy is different, mine asked me to avoid it fully and I listened.
In our joint family my saas was very firm about no papaya during pregnancy. I didn't argue and just avoided it, there are so many other fruits anyway. It kept everyone at home relaxed too honestly.
