My doctor mentioned scheduling a sonogram for me soon. I've heard the term before, but I'm not entirely sure what a sonogram for pregnancy is and what it shows. Can someone explain it simply?
My mother-in-law was worried if so many scans are safe for the baby, but our doctor explained that a sonogram is just an ultrasound and perfectly safe. We all went together for the anomaly scan and my MIL was so happy to see the baby on the screen!
I panicked so much when my doctor first wrote 'sonogram' on my prescription, thinking something was wrong! But actually, it's just the medical term for a routine ultrasound. It is completely normal and done multiple times during pregnancy to check the baby.
I recently delivered my baby, and I still remember my first sonogram so clearly. It is the ultrasound scan where you get to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time, which is the most magical feeling ever. It also helps the doctor check if the baby's growth is on track.
I used to lose sleep before every sonogram, worrying if the baby's measurements would be normal. But it's just a routine ultrasound to make sure everything is okay. If you are nervous, take your husband or mom along with you for support, it really helps calm the nerves.
It's basically the ultrasound where they put that super cold blue jelly on your stomach! For me, they had to move the probe twice as much to catch both my active twins. It's the best part because you get to see your little one moving around.
A sonogram is just another name for an ultrasound scan, which uses sound waves to show your baby on a screen. It is completely safe and natural, no harmful radiation at all. If you ever feel severe cramping or bleeding though, don't wait for a scheduled scan and contact your gynac immediately.
