I'm in my last month now and getting curious about how this whole thing works. My gynac mentioned dilation in passing but i didnt fully get it. At what point does the cervix actually start opening up?
My gynac told me the cervix normally stays closed and firm through pregnancy, and only starts opening as labour gets near, usually after 37 weeks or when contractions begin. They check dilation in cm during labour. Before that it should be shut tight.
Dont overthink this one. The body knows what to do, cervix opens when baby is ready to come, mostly in the last weeks. Your doctor will track it in your last checkups.
I was also confused about this. So from what I understood it stays closed almost till the end na? I keep worrying it might open early but doctor said mine is fine and long. Anyone else felt this paranoia?
Just adding a note, sometimes cervix can open too early which is called incompetent cervix, and that needs doctor attention. If you have history of preterm or feeling pressure down there, please mention to your gynac so she can check the length on scan.
For me dilation started only when actual labour pains came around 39 weeks. They checked and said 2 cm, then it slowly opened more. So normally it opens right at the end, not before.
