My doctor mentioned Dexa injection because there is some concern about early delivery. I got nervous and forgot to ask properly what it is for. Has anyone been given this during pregnancy?
My doctor gave me dexamethasone injections when there was risk of preterm delivery, she said it helps the baby's lungs mature faster so the baby breathes better if born early. It's a specific situation, not routine. She explained the whole reason clearly.
In my case it was given because I was at risk of early delivery, to strengthen baby's lungs. Please don't take it on your own ever, it's only given by doctors for particular reasons. Ask your gynac exactly why it's prescribed for you.
It's usually a steroid injection to help develop the baby's lungs when preterm birth might happen, or sometimes for certain other conditions. Definitely a doctor-decided thing. If yours prescribed it, ask her the specific reason in your case.
From what I understand it's given mainly to mature the baby's lungs if there's a chance of early delivery. The exact reason can differ per patient though, so the best person to explain is the doctor who prescribed it to you.
